# Aromatase Inhibitor (AI) Guide: Managing Estrogen on Steroids
Aromatase Inhibitors lower estrogen levels during steroid cycles. This guide covers AI selection, dosing, and side effects.
See our gynecomastia prevention guide.
How AIs Work
AIs block aromatase enzyme (converts testosterone to estrogen). Result: Lower estrogen.
Steroids that aromatize:
- Testosterone (heavily)
- Nandrolone (moderately)
- Dianabol (heavily)
- Boldenone (slightly)
Steroids that don't:
- Trenbolone
- Anavar
- Winstrol
- Masteron
AI Types
Anastrozole (Arimidex)
Dosing: 0.25-0.5mg daily (or every other day) Cost: $20-40 for full cycle Onset: 24-48 hours Timeline: 72 hours for full effect
Sides: Joint pain, dry skin, mood issues (if overdosed)
Letrozole (Femara)
Dosing: 0.5-1.25mg daily Cost: $30-50 for full cycle Onset: Faster/more powerful than anastrozole Timeline: 24-48 hours for full effect
Sides: More pronounced low-estrogen sides than anastrozole
Exemestane (Aromasin)
Dosing: 12.5-25mg daily Cost: $25-45 for full cycle Onset: Similar to anastrozole Timeline: 48-72 hours
Advantage: Slightly fewer joint-pain sides
AI Dosing Strategy
Preventive (Start Day 1)
Anastrozole: 0.25-0.5mg daily Letrozole: 0.5-1mg daily Exemestane: 12.5mg daily
Why start early: Prevent gyno before it starts
Responsive (Start When Gyno Appears)
Anastrozole: 0.5-1mg daily Letrozole: 1-1.25mg daily Exemestane: 25mg daily
Timeline: 3-7 days to see reduction in puffiness
Low-Dose Cycles
If running low testosterone (200-300mg):
- AI may not be needed
- OR use very low dose: 0.25mg anastrozole every other day
Reason: Lower test = less aromatization
AI Side Effects
Joint Pain (Most Common)
Why: Estrogen is needed for joint lubrication
Management:
- Lower AI dose
- Supplement with glucosamine/collagen
- Accept mild joint pain as tradeoff
- Use Nolvadex instead (blocks without lowering)
Dry Skin
Why: Estrogen supports skin hydration
Management:
- Moisturize daily
- Hydrate (drink water)
- Lower AI dose if severe
Mood Issues / Depression
Why: Low estrogen affects mood regulation
Management:
- Lower AI dose
- Ensure adequate food intake
- May resolve after cycle
Cardiovascular Issues
Why: Estrogen protects cardiovascular health
Management:
- Don't overdo AI (keep estrogen in range, not zero)
- Cardio 3-4x weekly
- Monitor blood pressure
Low Libido / ED (Paradoxical)
Why: Despite blocking estrogen, sometimes happens from overall hormonal disruption
Management:
- Paradoxical — lowering AI may help
- Ensure testosterone is adequate
- Check for low estrogen (too much AI)
Estrogen Target Ranges
Optimal during cycle: 20-30 pg/mL
Below 10: Too low (sides: joints, mood, libido issues) 10-20: Slight suppression (generally OK) 20-30: Ideal 30-40: Slightly high (gyno risk beginning) 40+: Too high (active gynecomastia risk)
Get blood work: Check estradiol levels mid-cycle (week 4-6)
AI + Testosterone Ratio
Higher test = more aromatization = more AI needed
Examples:
- Test 300mg/week → 0.25mg anastrozole daily
- Test 500mg/week → 0.5mg anastrozole daily
- Test 750mg/week → 0.75-1mg anastrozole daily
AI During Different Compounds
Testosterone + Nandrolone
- AI needed (both aromatize)
- Normal dosing: 0.25-0.5mg anastrozole daily
Testosterone + Trenbolone
- Low AI needed (tren doesn't aromatize)
- Dosing: 0.25mg every other day (or none)
Testosterone + Anavar + Masteron
- Low-moderate AI (anavar/masteron don't aromatize, test does)
- Dosing: 0.25mg every other day
AI + Nolvadex Comparison
Should you use both?
AI (lowers estrogen):
- Good for testosterone cycles (prevent gyno from aromatization)
- Bad: Can cause low-estrogen sides
Nolvadex (blocks estrogen reception):
- Good for nandrolone cycles (doesn't aromatize much, but progestin effects)
- Good: Doesn't lower estrogen (fewer sides)
- Bad: Takes longer to work
Recommendation:
- Test cycles: Use AI
- Nandrolone cycles: Use Nolvadex
- Combo cycles: Use AI primarily, add Nolvadex if needed
Stopping AI Post-Cycle
When to stop:
- When steroids stop (estrogen levels normalize on their own during PCT)
- Don't continue AI during PCT (need estrogen for recovery)
Timeline:
- Last dose of AI: Same day as last steroid injection (approximately)
- AI clears in 24-48 hours (no need to taper)
Cost Summary
AI for 12-week cycle:
- Anastrozole: $20-40
- Letrozole: $30-50
- Exemestane: $25-45
Cheapest: Anastrozole (most commonly available, cheapest)
AI Myths Debunked
Myth: "More AI = better results"
- Truth: Lower estrogen doesn't increase muscle gain. In fact, too-low estrogen may impair gains.
Myth: "Skip AI if using nandrolone (doesn't aromatize much)"
- Truth: Use Nolvadex instead (nandrolone has progestin effects).
Myth: "AI will eliminate gyno completely"
- Truth: AI prevents gyno; for existing gyno in later stages, surgery may be needed.
Summary
Use AI preventively on testosterone cycles to prevent gynecomastia. Start at 0.25-0.5mg anastrozole daily, adjust based on symptoms and blood work.
